  • Joined the Canadian Forest Service in 1993

Areas of Interest:

  • Environmental and physiological controls of shoot growth; have applied this knowledge to various research questions ranging from developing forest sector adaptations to climate change through impacts of air pollution on forest health to controlling stump sprouting of hardwoods without herbicides
  • Control of wood formation and stress resistance by plant growth regulators
  • Reforestation silviculture; specialized in seedling physiology during nursery culture and conifer reproductive biology
  • Ecology of forest vegetation in the Acadian Forest Region; tree, shrub and ground vegetation response to harvesting, as well as taxonomy and identification of forest plants

  • Canadian Co-Chair, Northeast Region Air Quality Committee (NERAQC). NERAQC’s mission is to preserve and enhance air quality and air quality related values, including adaptations to climate change of Protected Areas in the Northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada.

Current Graduate Student Advisory Committee:

  • Xin Yuan, University of New Brunswick: Growth of white spruce at high elevations in the Yukon

Current Research Projects

  • Innovative forest nursery practices to increase survival of white spruce and lodgepole pine seedlings as conditions become hotter and drier in Canada’s western forests
  • Identifying elite seedlots of white spruce best suited for growth under elevated carbon dioxide levels in Canada’s forests
  • Vulnerability of eastern hemlock to the air pollutant and greenhouse gas ground-level ozone
  • Shoot growth of willow in zero gravity of the International Space Station; Principal investigator: Dr. R. Savidge, University of New Brunswick and the Canadian Space Agency

  • B.Sc. (Hon.) in Biology (1977), Saint Francis Xavier University
  • M.Sc. in Forestry (1981), University of New Brunswick
  • Ph.D. (1990), University of Victoria
