Publications on taxonomy and faunistics that appeared in the Journal of the Entomological Society of Ontario over a 60-year period beginning in 1952 are tabulated. These consist of 60 papers on taxonomy with a total of 700 species, including 125 new ones, described and/or keyed. Almost 100 papers on faunistics (lists, new distributions for North America or parts of North America) were published, with a total of 4700 species mentioned. A brief overview of taxonomy and faunistics as given in JESO volumes is provided.
Plain Language Summary
This paper provides an overview of papers on taxonomy and faunistics published in the Journal of the Entomological Society of Ontario (JESO) over the past 60 years, since 1952. 60 papers on taxonomy authored by about 40 different people and covering a total of 700 species (including 125 new ones) were described and/or keyed. The insect groups covered are tabulated by order and family. Almost 100 papers on faunistics, i.e., lists of species, new distributions for North America or parts of North America, authored by about 80 different people were published, with a total of 4700 species mentioned. The overview points to the usefulness of JESO in tracking reasonably well these aspects of entomology in Ontario, except during the past decade when a plethora of electronic jounals of widely varying quality have appeared and now compete with JESO for papers.
