EVEOSD - Evaluation and Validation of EO-1 for Sustainable Development

EVEOSD project

Canada contains 10% of the world´s forests. Multitemporal Landsat data will be a primary source for measuring indicators of sustainable development, such as forest area, forest type, biomass, disturbance, above-ground carbon, reforestation, afforestation, and deforestation.

We will use EO-1 data to validate that products obtainable from earlier Landsats can be obtained from ALI and Hyperion. New products not possible with earlier Landsats will also be developed for ALI, Hyperion, and LAC. Comparisons will be made of reflectances obtained from EO-1 and the Landsat series.

Atmospheric correction models will be used to obtain the highest accuracies with EO-1. The efficacy of LAC and Hyperion for atmospheric correction will be assessed.

EVEOSD project-Table of contents

Project activities 1

Landsat bands will be synthesized from Hyperion and the continuity with earlier Landsats will be validated. The preferred bands and algorithms for forestry from Hyperion will be identified. Classifications of EO-1 data will be compared with earlier Landsats.

The four primary test sites are: the Greater Victoria Watershed in British Columbia; Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia; Algoma, Ontario; and Hoquiam, Washington. The three secondary test sites are: BOREAS SSA, Saskatchewan; BOREAS NSA, Manitoba; and Hinton, Alberta.

The EO-1 data will be evaluated for the measurement of forest structure, canopy chemistry, LAI, proportional estimation, and land cover change.

Project activities 2

Comparisons will be made between AVIRIS, case, Hyperion, Warfighter, and ground spectral measurements.

Evaluations will be made of methods for autonomous data acquisition for forest products.

Experiments will be conducted fusing ALI, Hyperion and LAC with GIS (topography, etc.) data and other satellites, such as Radarsat and Ikonos 2.

For this project additional airborne sensing will be conducted to extend ground measurements and to provide additional comparisons with the satellite observations.

Sensor performance will be assessed in terms of radiometric and geometric correction, temporal stability, and accuracy of calibrations.

Current status

casi flights have been conducted over sample plots in Algoma in summer 2000.

RPV helicopter flights by Professor Honda took place over the Greater Victoria Watershed plots in June 2000.

Field work and ground helicopter chemistry sampling took place in the Greater Victoria Water District in September 2000. We added Hoquiam, Washington as another test site for EO-1 where there is similar forest cover to the other EVEOSD west coast test sites and extensive historical analysis.

Landsat-7 and Radarsat-1 data were acquired for GVWD, Clayoquot, and Hoquiam. No AVIRIS flights occurred over GVWD, Hoquiam and Clayoquot Sound in September 2000.

Funding support obtained from CSA and our colaborators.

Spectral aquisitions

An Analytical Spectral Devices Inc (ADS) FieldSpec FR Spectroradiometer, loaned to us by TRW, was used to collect 3,900 ground reference spectra. Precision Differential GPS co-ordinates of the spectral data samples were taken to match ground data to satellite data (using four Trimble Pro-XRB GPS receivers).
