Amphibians and reptiles of Ontario
Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica)
Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica)
Description:
- 3 - 5 cm, smaller in Ontario than in other parts of their range
- tan or brown with a distinctive black mask that extends across the
face and behind the eardrums
- white stripe on the upper jaw
Habitat:
- very large range in North America, with a variable habitat
- moist woodlands near ponds that have emergent vegetation (for egg
attachment)
Conservation concerns, distribution and status:
- common and widespread throughout Ontario, although some areas in southern
Ontario no longer have populations probably because of the loss of forests
and wetlands for agriculture
- acid deposition may not be effecting the wood frogs because they appear
to be able to breed successfully in water with low pH levels
