Northern Leopard Frog (Rana pipiens)
Description:
- 5 - 9 cm
- green to light brown with large, dark, circular black spots with light
outlines on its back
- the dorso-lateral ridges are lighter than the rest of the frog
Habitat:
- lakes, ponds, marshes, and backwaters with emergent vegetation and
grasses
- moist, grassy fields in summer when frogs move away from the water
and forage
Conservation concerns, distribution and status:
- common and widespread throughout southern Ontario
- appears to have declined in northern Ontario, as it has in other parts
of its range (i.e. western Canada)
