Le Programme sur le dendroctone du pin ponderosa (2007–2010)

Protection des collectivités et des ressources forestières

Le Programme sur le dendroctone du pin ponderosa a apporté aussi soutien aux initiatives visant à réduire les menaces après infestation touchant la sécurité des collectivités et des individus — Premières nations comprises — en raison de la présence d’arbres morts et du risque d’incendie de forêt. Les répercussions d’une infestation sur la durabilité des forêts et sur l’avenir des collectivités ont également été évaluées, surtout à l’égard des valeurs futures des forêts et de l’utilisation des forêts à des fins autres que la récolte de bois.

Les Premières nations, les collectivités et les districts scolaires ont reçu de l’aide financière pour la gestion des combustibles et l’élimination des arbres dangereux dans les secteurs ravagés. Dans tous les cas, la gestion des combustibles a été faite conformément aux plans de protection de la faune préparés par des spécialistes et aux directives du programme Intelli-feu en vigueur. Le financement fédéral devait compléter le financement pour combler les besoins en sécurité assurés par les programmes provinciaux et locaux. Les collectivités des Premières nations et d’autres qu’elles ont participé activement à cet aspect du programme (voir la carte ci-dessous).

Le programme a également mené à terme d’autres recherches sur les impacts de l’épidémie de dendroctones sur l’hydrologie forestière et sur les options d’aménagement visant le maintien des objectifs d’aménagement forestier durable dans le contexte du régime de récupération de bois après infestation.
